week 03: marquee tools, feathering, layers (difference,) fade option (splat f,) and smudge tool (splat r.)

assignment: do this ->

Two in-class points not in the handout:

1. be sure to copy the enlarged source photos (click to enlarge, then left click the photo in web browser to get the copy option)

2. "new" in photoshop creates a canvas the size of the bitmap you just copied. So paste it. Go back to browser, click on other photo, then copy. Go back to photoshop, change canvas size, and paste.

week 4: in class - three or four source panorama, size (ruler), size (pixel density) and size (storage.) Dodge and Burn tools. Curves dialog.

43 44 45 46
Friday March 27 near Hillsville, VA looking north.

the enlargements of the above thumbnails are BIG (2048 x 1536 / 72dpi* - requiring between 380 and 480 kb storage) and may take a while to download depending on your internet connection. Size affects speed on the internet.

*All on line bitmaps are shown at 72 dpi.

Home printing uses 300 dpi or higher. Professional uses 600 or higher. Diminishing returns: there's no point using higher resolution than display can render.

Class activity: combining images

example: photomerge pm file> automate> photomerge

Photoshop cs4 greatly improves on the algorithm shown above!

Week 4 homework:
quiz (answers in class 5)

1. you have two bitmaps - both 5 x 7 inches, one at 72dpi, one at 300 dpi - which has higher file size?

2. You have two bitmaps, both 5 x 7 and 72 dpi. One is rgb and one is cymk. Which is 'larger?'

3. You have two bitmaps, both 5 x 7, 72 dpi and rgb. One is an 8 bit .jpg (jpeg) file and one is a 16 bit .tif (tiff) file. Which is 'larger?'

4. You have a one layer tif file and a 4 layer .psd (photoshop) file. Which is 'larger?'

week 5: Sharpen, blur , noise options. Image size with bicubic options (sharper, smoother, regular.) Wand & other selection tools. Photo copyright rules of thumb.

Rule of thumb: smaller - use sharper, larger, use smoother. Default: regular unless you change preferences.

'save as' options.

ACTIONS (like macros) multiple step pprocedures. For example, creating web images (I use ~800 x 600 for enlargements and ~150 x 212 for thumbnails.

Contrast Rule: when bits are gone, they're gone. (e.g. select all; contrast = 0)
Contrast Rule Corollary: If bits seem gone. they may not be. (e.g. select area; equalize)
Contrast Rule Lemma: If they're gone, you can put them back (paste into) stamp, or old fashioned paint tools.

Now that the class is over, it's time to begin - on your own, or in another class - but you must work - it's a skill - not just knowledge.

Objective 1 of this course: To create a basis for further learning of photoshop.
the internal logic of dialog boxes, handles, tools, fade is mostly consistent.

Objective 2 of this course: Beyond mechanical understanding (how to do)
to formulate an understanding of possibilities (what to do) (potential manipulations)

Praxis, praxis, praxis.
